I have been practicing yoga since 2003 and teaching since 2007. I am a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher or RYT. I will be taking a secondary RYT 200 hour training in spring-summer 2009. My practice developed from a sincere history of self discovery, and originates from two core beliefs.
Firstly, I believe the body is an amazing physical manifestation of memory. It has been my experience that traumatic events in my life deposited debris in my physical body, or muscles and joints. This translated into tightnesses, aches and pains, and immobility. I found immense emotional release when I began practicing yoga, and of course a greater capacity to move. This in turn gave me space to exist more freely; in my head, heart and physical body.
Secondly, I am also an athlete. I have been physically active all my life, and have developed muscles not necessarily in symmetry. I have found through my practice a unique balance in muscle development, leaning and toning of muscles, tendons and joints, and strengthening of subliminal or supportive tissues. I am no longer over/under developed in certain areas, nor do I experience weakness in joints. I have found yoga asanas to be very complimentary to the physicality of other athletic pursuits, as well as the single pointed focus and stamina I gain from a mindful practice.
